Male
Infertility Solutions
By Mel Ng
There are often mitigating factors when it comes to difficulties
conceiving. One of the most often overlooked factors; at least
until all other options have been exhausted is male infertility.
Perhaps part of the reason is the mental connotation that goes
along with considering the possibility on the part of men and
perhaps it’s because we often overlook the simplest of solutions
when it comes to the question of why women can or cannot seem
to conceive.
In all reality, women
should not begin fertility treatment until their partner has been
thoroughly tested for potential problems of his own. The good
news however, is that if you have a partner who has fertility
issues, the solutions aren’t as difficult to find as one
might thing—at least not for some issues of fertility.
There are certain things
we do which can also affect the sperm count in men in a detrimental
manner. Some of these things are prescription medications, smoking,
infections of which you may or may not be aware, environmental
toxins to which you may have been exposed, and even excessive
alcohol consumption. The good news is that a marked increase in
sperm count can be noticed in as little as three months of changing
habits, routines, or behaviors.
Infections are most
often treated easily with the use of antibiotics, some hormonal
conditions, which may lead to lower sperm count may also be treated
through injections of hormones. The truth of the matter is that
there are many options available when it comes to treating mild
causes of male infertility or mild problems associated with a
low sperm count.
Other problems are
not as easily treated but can occasionally treat with what would
have once been considered ‘out of the box’ types of
treatments. Intrauterine insemination treatment is one such treatment.
This procedure takes a sperm deposit, creates a concentrated solution
and inserts the solution directly into the uterus. By doing this,
the chances of conception are vastly improved. This is also an
effective when used in conjunction with cervical mucus problems.
For men who have a
higher degree of infertility problems, a higher degree of treatment
may be in order. Some possible solutions include: in vitro fertilization
utilizing intracytoplasmic sperm injection. If it is important
that you have a child that is genetically your own, this may be
the only way to go when there are sever sperm deficiencies. Even
if there is no sperm ejaculated sperm can be obtained from the
reproductive tract. If genetics isn’t necessary for peace
of mind it is quite possible that a suitable sperm donor can be
used.
Male infertility is
often a sensitive subject as is female infertility. The important
thing to remember is to face this as a medical problem and not
a personal problem. There are solutions to pursue and consider.
Even if the solutions aren’t the ones you feel are ideal,
if the end result is a beautiful healthy baby, I think it was
the best possible solution.
If there isn’t
a solution that you are comfortable choosing at the moment, you
can either wait and hope that advances in medical science make
other solutions possible or you have the time to weight the pros
and cons and reevaluate your situation and desires for the future.
It is very rare that any decision must be made today about your
fertility future. Take the time and make the decision that you
are the most comfortable with as this will affect your relationship
with your baby.
